British Open Commemorative Awards

These glass mementos record the band’s victories at the 2010 and 2013 British Open Championships.

They were presented to the band at the contest at Symphony Hall in Birmingham alongside the magnificent Gold Trophy, first prize of £3,000, the Belle Vue Challenge Cup and commemorative banner, with each player later receiving individual paperweights and signed certificates as permanent reminders of their achievement.

On each occasion, Musical Director Ian Porthouse was presented with a Harry Mortimer ‘Maestro’ Trophy as the winning conductor; whilst in 2010 the band’s solo trombone player Stephen Sykes won the Stanley Wainwright Memorial Trophy as ‘Best Soloist’.

The 2013 success also saw principal cornet Dewi Griffiths win the Stanley Wainwright trophy, with solo euphonium Daniel Thomas taking the Geoffrey Whitham Memorial Trophy as ‘Best Euphonium’ and Ian Roberts claim the Brian Evans Memorial Trophy as ‘Best Soprano’ – the first time all three individual awards had been won by a single band.

The 2010 success was also historic, as it saw Tredegar become the first band ever to win both the British Open Grand Shield and the British Open titles in the same year – a feat that has yet to be repeated.

The trophies are now displayed in the presentation trophy cabinet in the band’s rehearsal room.
